About "The Map Guy"

Alan James Robinson's fascination with maps started at a very early age. Drawn to exploration, he used to hike through the woods with his father searching for undiscovered fishing spots. For ten years he had a permanent campsite on the fabled waters of the Beaverkill, Willowemoc and the Delaware Rivers of New York- the birthplace of American fly fishing.

Alan is an outdoorsman by nature and an artist by vocation. His interest in map work developed through his experiences with painting. With respect for the cartographer's art, Alan developed his own technique of "glazing." Glazing allows 90-95% of the original information on the map to show through the watercolor paints, thereby not compromising the beauty and information of the map. Alan has been perfecting this technique since 1988 when he first created a "Trout Lands & Fish Waters" painting for a collector.

"A bad day of fishing is still a very good day."

Alan has been a fly fisher for over 35 years. He has fished every continent except Antarctica (fishing for penguins is not of interest as of yet). Alan's passion has drawn him to travel to such places as New Zealand , Tasmania, Africa, Australia, Chile, Argentina, Alaska, British Columbia, Central America, the Caribbean and Great Britain. He has searched for every major subspecies of trout and salmon in North America and has spent many summers exploring the famed waters of Colorado, Montana, Idaho and Wyoming.

Freshwater and saltwater environments are Alan's studio. He has amassed over 25,000 photographs of fish, has visited over 45 fishing and hunting lodges and has been a scuba diver for over 25 years. From walking around his local mill stream to photographing a safari in Africa, Alan's enthusiasm for nature has never waned.

Alan is a master printer. He established The Press of the Sea Turtle in 1979. He has published 27 limited edition letterpress books. His latest endeavor is a co-publication with Safari Press, Hunting The Big Five- an African Safari letterpress book. He has illustrated various books on fishing including The Quotable Fisherman through Lyon's Press and has done illustrations for publishers and magazines including: Disney, Knopf, Fly Rod and Reel, Shooting Sportsman, and Sporting Classics. His books and artwork are part of the collections of the Folger Shakespeare Library, Washington D.C., National Library of Australia, Stanford University, Yale University, Princeton University, Boston Public Library , New York Public Library, and many others.
